Stands with Survivors, Call on Latino Community to Reckon with Legacy
"It takes courage for survivors of sexual abuse to share their stories. The women who have spoken out about Cesar Chavez, and those reliving their pain in silence, deserve our full support.
The stories are shocking and deeply saddening. While Chavez is an important historical figure for many, no individual should be shielded from scrutiny over wrongdoing. Women coming forward should not only be heard. Any allegation of misconduct or abuse must be taken seriously and addressed with integrity and accountability.
Though I never met him, I grew up looking up to Cesar Chavez. I helped organize many events like festivals, parades and breakfasts to celebrate him. But those of us in the Latino community who have praised his legacy must now lead in calling out his behavior and refusing to continue celebrating someone who does not deserve that honor. Personally, he will not stand as the reflection of the values and principles that I will fight for.
My priority has always been the well-being and dignity of others including victims of abuse. As a community, we have a responsibility to confront difficult truths of abuse and continue to build environments where safety and respect are non-negotiable."
